Still a flat slab, but the Mi Mix 2 is now a flat slab with ultra-smooth, rounded edges, which results in a softer, less boxy design. MIUI allows full degree rotation, making this one a forehead instead of a chin if you prefer. The included leather case feels excellent and really complements both the design and feel of the phone, making it not only considerably easier to hold thanks to the leather make, but also considerably sturdier too.
As the Mi MIX is sporting the latest in mobile computing, the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, you should absolutely expect the best in performance that you can imagine on a modern mobile device.
First off daily performance is excellent and shows no sign of slow down or reloading of apps at all. Switching between apps and launching apps is absolutely instantaneous, and I never found the phone lacking in multi-tasking abilities by any stretch of the imagination.
Xiaomi offers no split-screen multi-tasking of any kind, which is a crying shame given how large this screen is, and in general the interface for switching between apps is a little clunky simply because the thumbnails are so large.
This is a cool idea which comes in handy some times, but ultimately is less useful than the vertical carousel stock Android features. Internal storage speed was found to be a bit lacking when compared to other phones on the market, even other Xiaomi phones, and as such I found there were times when intensive 3D applications would stutter or run slower than usual while loading or streaming content in the background, and benchmarks reflect this.
Benchmarks sit right about where you would expect, and the Xiaomi Mi MIX came in right with the rest of the Snapdragon pack. As a reference it seems to have slightly higher single core speed than the Pixel XL, while multi-core is identical.
Check out all the benchmarks run below:. Android Pay is designed to be secure, and thus without an officially supported OS the inner workings of the system could fall off at any time. This sounds weird and it definitely is strange, but even more odd is the actual placement in the physical sense on the phone; right smack in the middle of the screen.
This not only makes it difficult to hear people and awkward to hold, but placing your ear right in the middle of the earpiece makes the screen turn on and untold buttons to be pressed.
Thankfully speakerphone is good, with loud and clear audio coming from the bottom-facing speaker. Easily one of the biggest highlights of the phone during my usage, the battery life on the Xiaomi Mi MIX is absolutely astounding.
The Mi MIX often lasted nearly 2 days on a single charge, and with moderate to light usage I could see most users easily pulling this off on a regular basis. Xiaomi has even built in an upscaling feature for intelligently scaling the quality of those standard bit audio files up into a more pleasing bit quality, and the results are quite good.
Xiaomi still provides a great custom equalizer in the sound options, complete with a range of presets that will help you get the most out of your sound system. I found the default settings increased the bass just a tad too much, creating a more muffled sound than I would like, but adjusting it was easy and took only a few seconds before it sounded great again.
Subsequently the speaker on the bottom of the phone, which functions as the primary speaker for all audio coming from the phone, could be better as well. Part of this of course is its placement, as facing down is simply not as ideal as front-facing speakers ever will be.
This of course is disappointing considering the price difference between the phones, not to mention some significant hardware differences as well. This features the improved camera experience over MIUI 7, and includes a better labeled way of switching modes, faster overall operation and a few extra modes over some previous devices.
Manual focus this time around is done in millimeter segments instead of using focus peaking as we saw on the Mi 5, which is a huge disappointment considering how useful focus peaking is for manual focusing.
This is because you need to turn the screen on first and then swipe from the icon on the bottom right to launch. At least half the time I tried launching this way I found the screen would bounce back, forcing me to grab it again and take more time to launch it.
Adding in a quick way to launch the camera, like double tapping the power button as many phones have adopted, would be ideal. Focusing is average at best and can take up to 2 seconds or more when it struggles, even though it utilizes the generally excellent Phase Detection Auto Focus PDAF method.
Photo quality in general is mediocre at best, and most of the time I found the camera on the Xiaomi Mi MIX to be pretty poor. In daylight the Mi MIX is an admirable performer during the day, popping out clean and clear photos that have pretty good dynamic range, white balance and color accuracy.
At night things take a drastic turn for the worse, and the Mi MIX is simply an awful night time camera. At the same time it seems that Xiaomi is allowing the ISO to range up to when needed, which normally would let in tons of light with this slow of a shutter, but it seems the sensor chosen here is simply too small for the task.
The front facing camera is not good either, offering bad looking, low resolution shots that are overly processed in the best of scenarios. Even in daylight these photos look blurry and heavily processed, removing detail that should be there on a modern shooter, and at night this is simply a terrible selfie taker to say the least.

Google Play Books users can now set however many bookmarks they want in an audiobook, so that they can go back to favorite parts, for starters. So we mentioned that we previously reviewed the ceramic Mi Mix.
The new Mi Mix 2 still has a ceramic rear panel but a series aluminium frame. It's an improvement - much nicer looking, if less at odds with other flagships on the market.
Still a flat slab, but the Mi Mix 2 is now a flat slab with ultra-smooth, rounded edges, which results in a softer, less boxy design. There are no physical buttons on the front, but you can access home, back and multitasking buttons at the base of the screen, or tuck them away from view so you must swipe up to see them.
The Mi Mix 2 - and the Mi Mix before it - has no top bezel. Some of the cheaper copycats have snuck in a speaker and sensors right at the very top of the screen.
Mi Mix 2 does this too, which is a departure from its predecessor, but seriously - blink and you'd miss it. Mi Mix uses special technology to do away with other unsightly blemishes at the top of the handset, using a hidden ultrasonic proximity sensor and a tweaked sound-guided speaker.
It's a setup that works as well as any other standard phone and call quality is good. Another thing notably missing here is a 3. There's the phone's built-in speaker, too, of course. But we weren't overly impressed with this.
It's not especially loud, and quality is a bit inconsistent. Swapping in that 14nm chip with the 10nm Snapdragon, also running at 2. The Snapdragon makes huge savings on battery life, and significantly improves performance.
The Mi Mix 2 has performance as good as anything we've seen this year, bar the iPhone 8, and in fact its full-HD display means that it doesn't have to push so hard in our onscreen graphics tests.
We've collated the results of our benchmarks for various comparable phones in the chart below, but the Mi Mix 2 is right up there with the likes of the Galaxy Note 8, OnePlus 5 and Pixel 2 XL.
And it shows a significant boost over the original Mi Mix. We recorded a staggering points in Geekbench 4's multi-core component, which is faster than the Pixel 2 XL and only a tiny amount behind the Galaxy Note 8 and OnePlus 5.
Its AnTuTu score of beats the Note 8's,, though. In graphics tests using GFXBench the Mi Mix 2 scored the maximum framerate of 60fps in T-Rex, so we increased the intensity and in Manhattan it achieved a commendable 55fps.
Lastly we run JetStream, which is a JavaScript benchmark. The Mi MIx 2 scored So what do all these numbers mean? In essence, the Mi Mix 2 is a powerhouse. We defy you to find any issue with its performance.
All these options are generous, though there is no possibility of adding in more later via a microSD card. Connectivity-wise the only thing missing is an IR blaster. There's also the aforementioned dual-SIM capability that will be useful if you want to use separate contracts for home and abroad, or business and leisure, and Mi Mix 2 supports all UK 4G connectivity bands.
In this regard the MIUI operating system supports Dual Apps, allowing you to run two instances of the same app each with their own home screen shortcut. This might save you having to keep switching your logins within apps, and it ties in neatly with the second relevant software feature Second Space lets you create a separate space on your phone that is password-protected.
You can import photos, files and apps to this space, then switch between spaces using the command in the notification bar. It may come in useful if you're using two numbers on the phone, or if you have something to hide.
Mi Mix 2 has been advertised as using the same camera as the Mi6 and, for that matter, the original Google Pixel, which is a bit confusing given that the Mi6 has a dual-camera and the Mi Mix 2 does not.
The only difference you'll find is the absence of any 'bokeh' effects. It didn't wow us as other flagship cameras have, but it's by no means a poor offering. Detail is sharp, colours realistic, and low-light photography is acceptable if not the best we've seen, provided you allow it time to properly focus.
You can check out some of our test shots below, with auto and HDR settings respectively, and then in a low-light scene. There's also a 5Mp camera at the front but, as we've mentioned, awkwardly placed at the bottom right so you'll need to turn the Mi Mix 2 upside down to use it properly.
It is quite the departure from the Android to which you will likely be familiar, with a quite different settings menu and the loss of the app tray. Fortunately there is a search bar within the settings menu that helps you to find what you're looking for, and it should all become familiar fairly quickly anyway.
We've heard several critics comment that there's a lot of bloatware on this phone. We reckon that's an unfair comment. Sure, there is some, but all of which can be uninstalled very easily.
The remaining apps are not bloatware, but alternatives to the Google services UK users are familiar with, since Google services are not preinstalled.

Overall refresh and persistence rates of the pixels could definitely be better though, as there is some visible trailing when scrolling in any app, especially when contrasting light icons on a dark background.
The Mi MIX sports a brand new design for Xiaomi, and not just regarding the bezels either; Xiaomi has outfitted the phone with a completely ceramic body, opting for more rare materials than metal or glass can offer.
For reference Diamond is 10 MoH, the hardest of minerals, while sapphire is just a notch down at 9 MoH, and the latest Gorilla Glass is around a 5 or 6. Part of the process of making this so scratch resistant is coating the ceramic with layers of finish, however that also makes the device unbelievably slippery.
The left side holds the dual nano-SIM tray, while the right side holds a rather flimsy pair of ceramic buttons. These buttons are wobbly and not only feel hollow, but they feel incredibly cheap and unfitting for the rest of the device.
Up top is a single 3. The back of the phone features a round camera lens with dual-LED flash to the right, as well as a circular fingerprint reader below. The more expensive Mi MIX model features 18k gold trim around these two circular components.
The front is truly where the design takes a very interesting turn, and shows some significant evolution over the previous bezel-less phones from Sharp in one big way: Housed here is the single front-facing camera, situated all the way to the bottom right of the phone.
I thought this would be less awkward in use than it actually is, but even if you find it awkward you can just flip the phone upside down and take pictures that way.
MIUI allows full degree rotation, making this one a forehead instead of a chin if you prefer. The included leather case feels excellent and really complements both the design and feel of the phone, making it not only considerably easier to hold thanks to the leather make, but also considerably sturdier too.

Small chin despite the non-existent bezels. November 17, Reviews, Xiaomi, Xiaomi Phones. To say the original was unwieldy is something of an understatement. The Mi Mix 2 is much smaller thanks to a reduced screen size and a 12 percent smaller chin.
The screen is still enormous, at 5. The Quick Ball feature remains available too, placing onscreen quick access to the multitasking menu and home screen, and the ability to lock the screen or take a screenshot.
In future that could mean improved app compatibility, and for now you can use the Settings menu to configure which apps are allowed to take advantage of the maximum aspect ratio.
The screen itself is a stunner, crystal clear, bright, and with realistic colour reproduction. Viewing angles are good, too. All the things we'd expect from a decent IPS panel.
Xiaomi is holding out on the resolution, though, and while many of its competitors are including Quad-HD it has yet to release anything higher than full-HD on a smartphone.
You should take into account that the screen is now smaller and the new 10nm processor significantly more efficient, but the reality is you're likely to find yourself with a day's usage here, probably with some juice to spare the following morning.
However, we do like the fact the smaller battery makes the phone lighter - now g, previously g. This makes a huge difference to our overall impression of the phone.
So we mentioned that we previously reviewed the ceramic Mi Mix. The new Mi Mix 2 still has a ceramic rear panel but a series aluminium frame. It's an improvement - much nicer looking, if less at odds with other flagships on the market.
