They are using the IMX 21Mp sensor like most others, but of course the ISP image signal processor and software also plays a part of the quality of images, and and that is generally where the Chinese manufactures haven't caught up to the Samsungs and Apples of the world.

The Mi5 will likely be popular that way, but between the price, availability and locked bootloader even that is not without issues. I couldn't agree more. The Redmi Note 3 was perfect for me hardware wise, apart from the capacitive buttons being the wrong way around, which I find annoying.

The thing that often ruins it with these Chindaroids is the UI or issues with apps. Thinking of the InFocus M for my dad. Doesn't need anything special and barely uses his phone so the battery is not a huge deal.

If I need to do some tweaking to get things up and running like install a ROM or something, I can, but it would be good if there was a minimal of stuffing around and things just worked.

Minuses The inFocus V5 launcher is absolute crap! Nova Launcher is a good choice to resurrect the lost usability. Both sim slots are 4G capable but NOT simultaneously! If you are using 4G for your data on one sim the other operates at 2G.

This is a serious bummer that is documented in the on-line brochure. You can switch the 4G radio to the other sim without opening the sim slot, however. For those looking to root the phone and install a custom ROM, just forget it!

The ROM is totally locked down. I have tried everything to root this thing. The external micro SD can be configured as the default write device so your camera and most other apps will put their content there.

The Mi4 certainly does. Or does it still have to be done manually like a normal custom ROM? You just go into About Phone and set it to check manually or automatically and if automatically, you can choose how often you want to be notified of updates.

Since they're usually nightlies, I just check manually on my OnePlus One. It downloads the ROM in the background and then asks you to agree to apply the update.

Minimum android versions required is highly subjective and is basically up to the developer of the app and the app requirements but as a rule anything from say android 4 or 4.

I honestly don't think there'll be any app issues, a lot of phones only ever see slight updates and rarely upgrades unless it is a flagship. The Google Play store recognises what android version you are on and will only show you the apps compatible with it.

Main concern to me would be a key-logger, as nothing else on the phone is sensitive, but key logging my Password Safe would be a real problem. I think the Mi Max gonna sell like hotcakes. Xiaomi spec it right and price it right.

Just want to warn anybody who's contemplating an Elephone P I bought one about a month back and returned it inside of 2wks. It was built well physically, but everytime i used i noticed something else that wasn't working.

I was desperately hanging out for a software update so that the camera was actually useable, really — it was that bad. Once it came it wiped out cellular data access. Nothing at all, all gone. Don't even get me started about battery life Elephone were exactly zero help.

Antelife where i got it from are incompetent and rarely respond to emails, and if they do it's somebody different from the previous response. Paypal have surprisingly been no help whatsoever so i'll likely be out of pocket.

A phone that you might like to look into is the Umi Super. It has very decent specs and comes with stock Marshmallow. It's the only Umi phone I've seen that supports both 3G and I'm done experimenting with other Chinese brands.

I've used Xiaomi before and that'll do me fine for a secondary device. Huawei i'd be content if price wise they didn't miss the mark. Actually, the Umi Iron and Touch have received a lot of negative feedback online.

Listening to music doesn't drain the battery nearly as much as my old iPod R. I went from a HTC oneX to the Xiaomi Mi3 am 2 weeks off using it for 2 years, would really like an Mi4s but can't seem to want to relegate it it to the cupboard yet.

Why don't they spend zero on software just put on stock Android and spend a little more on the hardware product. It's not that simple. Umi does that with its phones and there are bugs that need to be fixed.

My friend has P and the camera shutter is really slow. Shutter speed is OK. Not slow but not the fastest I've used either. Photos are detailed, but a little under exposed. Only downside with the phone is it's loudspeaker.

I am also a 15 year sprint customer in living in the no network area northwest of the airport in MO. The key to my goodservice is the antenna in the phone hence the reason for this question. Now there is an LTE tower from Sprint a mile from the house.

Problem is getting to someone who will give a consistent story on service trials and costs. I am thinking about going to Verizon and killing this senoirity which means absolutely nothing with Sprint.

Combine that with the good experience my wife had, and I decided on a Moto X for the 16 year old as well. Now the tricky one. The 14 year old really wants to be in the smartphone crowd, but we really want to maintain controls on her internet access for a while longer.

I love the idea of the pay for what you use model for 3 people who mostly use their phones for texting and most of their data is consumed over wifi. I had two teenagers that lucked into two iPhones from their older siblings.

And exactly that happened. A zoe is a short 3 second moving picture, nothing really special. When you go through the gallery however it creates a Harry Potter newspaper-esque effect, really cool but not something super special.

The video highlights is super special however. Basically you go to an event or whatever and take a bunch of pictures and Zoes and it makes a highlight reel with funky filters and music, automatically.

You can upload them to Youtube. Every single reviewer I read before I bought the phone loved it. My family and friends love the highlights I upload to youtube. It gets me to take more pictures.

It truly is a feature that will make some people chose the HTC One over other phones. Considering everything else I would prefer the removable battery and expandable memory of an Play Edition S4, but I would never give up my Zoe highlights.

Says it offers a faster and safer way to get to my online accounts and easier checkout when buying stuff online.

In particular, the paragraph dismissing the S4 and anything else older also rubs me the wrong way as well. I have the LG G2 and I love it. When I first purchased it back in December, I was so afraid to switch from the iPhone but I have been so incredibly pleased with it.

AND as far as I know, LG is on the up and up as a company and deserving of some props for all of their amazing products. I am ready for an upgrade and I am on a budget.

I still wish to have a great android phone however. A site like The Wirecutter should be concerned with the immediate and the near-future, not rumors of new phones at the horizon. The Nexus line has been fairly consistent in release schedule, price, and quantity for the past two cycles.

I would totally prefer to pre-order and simply have a date when it would arrive, even if it was a month or so. They say that pre-order is annoying, but this invite system is way worse.

Table specs are nothing. Real world usage is all that matters. My wife has the M8 and it blows the S5 away. The touchwiz requires more power to run thus needing all that high hardware.

The screen is nice on it and the camera is nice on the S5 as well. I chose the Remix over the Samsung mini because of touchwiz. Table specs are there but real world usage which is what matters most is not for the S5.

This is handily the best Android phone overview I have yet to read. Have you considered rolling your iPhone coverage in with it? IOS vs Android is mostly personal preference and this guide is pretty slick and even handed about personal preference, why not use this format and include the iPhone?

Normally, I consider The Wirecutter to be about the only consumer review site that does a decent job of identifying and prioritizing the salient characteristics that really matter in a product and giving excellent, nuanced reviews.

But I think you phoned it in this time pun intended. When they used the S5, they found it laggy. Normally, I expect The Wirecutter to always be on top when it comes to discerning reviews.

Please take a look at where you differed from other phone reviewers and consider that your standards may have fallen a bit short. Other reviewers did a better job than you this time, but I know you can do better still.

I need help escalating a wireless carrier issue. The phone data never works for more than a day or two. Voice always works, but data never works. After hours of tech support and some major reboots etc, it might work for a day and then boom, back to no internet.

Seen the problem recur in 3 different states so its not a location issue. Antennae bar is usually full, and in fact a Verizon iPhone sitting next to it has full data always. Tech support has even replaced the instrument once and the SIM card twice.

Perhaps something is wrong in the way the Verizon network interfaces with the HTC phone. Can you help me escalate this? Bring it into a brick and mortar Verizon store and demand to speak with the manager.

Just sold my Nexus 5 for a good price and ordered a OnePlus One! The build quality is unbelievable for the price. It shipped with Kitkat though and the OTA updates came soon after.

I like Camera HS.. What about the LG G2 for good cheap phone. It may be older but it still had good specs and camera. I think it got lollipop update before the LG G3. I would not expect it to get much after that but if being on the latest software was important I would go S6 or Iphone 6.

I just retired my S3 for an S6, and the battery and SD card slot were not significant concerns for me. Those are the next ones for me. Qi charging is not on the list however it is becoming of interest.

All of the flagship Android phones tick my first 2 boxes before this. If my needs matched the needs of the most consumers I would own an IPhone! Basically, you can use them for storing media.

Woke up to this news and bitterly disappointed to see mid-range specs, clone-like design and no strong focus on image processing, m as was Nokia's specialty once. I really do miss the days of the Nokia Lumia phones.

HMD taking the licence and producing mid and budget range phones is not appealing at all. I bought one of these recently on eBay, from Singapore. Unfortunately, it's pretty useless as it is with no Google Play Store, or any other Google apps.

Hopefully a global update will arrive and all will be well, but until then I was warned on the eBay site that Google Play wasn't included, but I didn't realise what that meant.

I'd be extremely wary of this. At best they have found a way to flash Google Play Services on the Chinese version. At worst, it's just the Chinese version with no Google Play. I can only imagine the phone having a hacked ROM allowing for the installation of the Google Play app, and would possibly disable OTA update support as a consequence.

If you were to order one from China, your only hope would be for the release of a global ROM which you might be able to flash onto the device later on. It's all a bit too hard in my opinion, better to be patient.

For those who might be interested, JerryRigEverything has done an extremely detailed durability test and then a teardown of the Nokia 6. This is the Chinese version, however the hardware should be exactly the same as the global version, so his observations should apply to the global version as well.

For the record, the Nokia 6 seems to be an extremely well built and solid device. It's clear that the new guys at HMD want to continue Nokia's reputation in this regard.

I don't mind waiting for the actual release. Still deciding on my next phone. I just googled this morning to see how big the battery was and that site popped up. The Nokia 6 is looking promising though.

They have publicly said it will be released in Q2, which is April to June. Speculation is that they'll be released in May. I am looking forward to getting another "nokia" phone but stock android and the promise of quick updates and security patches is what i'm looking forward too Bit disappointed that wireless charging is missing.

I'd still wait a month or so for global release though. I believe we will see local availability in Australia as well with warranty and everything. Worth the wait IMO. HMD has established local offices in Australia.

The phones were launched at MWC. I don't expect they'll release another press release about exact date of availability. It will just become available through normal retailers.

HMD have also said that they also plan on having a global online store. We'll see whether that becomes available in Australia or not. That's going to create a huge supply problem — I can't see them following through on that undertaking.

I think they'll open the order book Q2 and keep folks waiting months for fulfillment. They are a reputable vendor. FIH a subsidiary of Foxconn, the company that also manufactures iPhones, amongst other things bought Nokia's old factories from Microsoft specifically to manufacture the new Nokia phones for HMD.

If you look at Foxconn's latest earnings report, you'll see that they have been investing hundreds of millions of dollars into ramping up the supply chain for the new Nokia phones.

We've been discussing these details in this thread for a while now, for anyone who is interested: That is exactly what they have been doing. Cranking out such large volumes of essentially new product is a seriously big commercial risk.

With regards to the dual sim capability. From my reading, the second sim is on "standby" and won't be used if the primary is in active use on either a call or data.

But if neither are in use and a call comes in, the appropriate sim will take it. Also the second sim is only on the 2G network. So not much use to us as we are in the process of shutting down the 2G.

A data session will not prohibit the second SIM from receiving a call, however if you are on a call with with one SIM, then the other SIM cannot be used for the duration of the call.

You probably won't receive calls on 4G as telcos need to enable VoLTE for that and they probably won't for this model, but you can make and receive calls on 3G using either SIM, and you can use 4G for data when you are not in a call.

I have a dual sim Xiaomi phone and can send and receive calls on Telstra 4G on secondary sim other sim Optus is 3G. Synthetic benchmarks like Geekbench and Antutu have no real relavance to real world usage.

Software optimisation has a lot more to do with what users perceive as "fast". SD is no speed deamon, but with a clean and optimised build of Android, free of blaotware and junk, it can feel very fast.

A clean and optimised build of Android can cut down on touch latency and hit 60 fps in UI, which is what a "fast" UI looks like. Open up the Play Store on a Google Pixel and Galaxy S8 side by side and start scrolling and then tell me which one feels faster.

It's not the phone with the supposedly more powerful SoC. You seem to have done a bit of homework on phones. Any pointers to comparisons of the forthcoming Nokia models with those from, say, oneplus, xiaomi, lenovo?

I mean, it comes down to what you care about. Personally I'm not a fan of bloated, iPhone-ified Asian ROMs with garish saturated colours and plethora of "security software" that's more like malware.

So, I try to steer away from them. Xiaomi generally gives you good value for money on a spec sheet, but not all their phones have a global ROM, only those sold outside China do.

I like that OnePlus sticks close to stock Android, but they also have a very chequered history of updating their phones. The OnePlus 2 barely got any updates. They seem to have done a better job with the OnePlus 3 though.

Others don't find that quite so important, so they are willing to overlook that. Lenovo and Asus generally have had the most crapware installed on their phones, so I've never even looked seriously at their offerings.

Last but not least, all of these manufacturers are about to release their new phones in the next few months, so if you are not in a hurry, it's a good idea to wait and see what they each bring to the table.

For one thing, the G5 Plus is not unibody metal. It's a plastic construction with a metal back. Very different from the solid, unibody construction of the N6. Lenovo also has an abysmal track record of updating their phones.

Although I understand this has been released in Finland but that may have been a sentimental move? And it raises the question why what is the strategic reason the marketing reason for releasing it in emerging markets first is there a rationale to this.

The cynical reason explanation would be that they want to roadtest them thoroughly before perhaps releasing it in developed markets. They want NOKIA to become the goto brand for smart phones in those markets and they're doing it with what they believe is a good product that locals can afford; not a stripped down compromised special made to hit a low price point.

Neither Apple, nor Samsung are good value. Samsung is better tuned in to affordability by having product at numerous price points. Yes but consumers in developed markets want value phones too, so I don't see the difference.

There are lots of potential customers in Asia, way, way more than in Aus. Once they have that all important market share it takes an extraordinary amount of mismanagement to lose it — as NOKIA knows all too well.

While I haven't had the Nokia 6 in my hand, I have tested devices with Snapdragon before, and it is a very frugal chipset. Let me rephrase, the SD might not be the fastest chipset on the planet, but it is definitely the most power efficient chipset.

Many OEMs are bad bad bad at this. They sell you a flashy phone, then they abandon you. The lack of ongoing support cannot make up the minor advantage in hardware specs. I found that with the Moto G, the t-mobile reception was so bad as to make the phone nearly worthless as an actual phone.

They take up a lot less space than a USB charger and take your phone from zero to full-charge instantly without adding any cables or bulk to the device, or subjecting the charging port to the stress of a micro USB connector bent into a pocket in my pants or bag.

USB chargers are great, too—I use them a lot—but are only slightly more convenient than charging from the wall. I would second or third, or fourth the suggestion that a removable battery is critical.

I think you should compare the price taking account of the memory storage options. If you want or need more than 32gb, with the pixel, you have to switch to the gb version, whereas with the S7 you can pop in a cheaper microsd card of any size.

The big negative in the reviews was the software. But if you use a third party launcher, such as Nova which I use, all that nonsense and their apps go away. You are left with a very fast phone with great sound and display and great build, with all modern bells and whistles included.

Also a promise of pushing out Nougut 7. I have no doubt they are doing as a loss leader to make a name of themselves. But, if you are willing to take a chance, it is an incredible bargain.

Easily as good as iPhone or Samsung at a third or quarter of the price. And if they fold in a year, so what. You got one or two years of service for very little dollars.

I agree that the Pixel phones are the best smartphones for rich power users. These are surprisingly capable and well built and a fraction of the price of a Pixel or Galaxy or iphone. Great phone, simply fantastic battery life.

Best money I have spent on a phone. OnePlus has long been a favorite in this range. LG G6 is also nice with a better camera, but more crapware. The Nexus 5x did a lot of that, but unfortunately has the infamous bootloop issue and Google has turned its back on users experiencing the issue.

Plus its basically the same size as the 5x. Why spend THAT much money on a phone? I had a 5x and the Pixel 2 fits in my hand better than it did. Though, it is much slicker so be mindful of that.

Who cares about a couple of mm of size or an ounce or two of weight? Battery life is far more important. Shaving weight leads to phones that bend in your pocket, batteries that run out after a few hours and removing essential components like headphone jacks.

This is a must have feature for me as I have have very poor reception at my office. I can see how that could be a dealbreaker for a lot of people. The last acceptable phone is the LG v20, as it is the last flagship phone with both removable battery and an SD reader.

All of its components can be repaired using only a screwdriver. No newer phone offers all of these features and these things outweigh all other purchasing criteria. Everything else is irrelevant.

Seems irresponsible to not mention OnePlus and spyware. Or other products and ad tracking installed by the manufacturer without consent. Perhaps even disingenuous to not warn the audience about the pitfalls of cheaper laptops and cellphones in general.

Coming from an LG V10, it was a nice upgrade. So there may be a wait for Oreo.. Having an iPad, I used to put the latest OS on it but learned.. The Oneplus 3 has Oreo so they are committed even to older phones.

My Dash charge system is so far the fastest in the business.. It does so without heating up the phone, which Quick Charge does. I usually go to bed with the phone off the charger and just plug it in while I get ready in the morning.

I would love to see these or other smartphones reviewed with respect to their long-term durability. If something goes wrong with the hardware, especially the battery, after the warranty expires, will it be straightforward to replace?

Will the manufacturer offer hardware support, even at some off-warranty cost? There were multiple people whose batteries failed, rendering the phone unusable I know a few.

With a 4k HDR screen, and a really minimalist interfaced design compared to the Samsung bloat, I really love this phone. Comparing it to the Samsung Galaxy 8 my wife has, the XZ Premium has a better screen, and better camera in my opinion.

Also, not having the infinity screen is great as well. The edge applications just slow the system down, and get activated by accident. And they made a button, when buttons are so rare, that nobody wants.

Apps you install on your phone to modify what that button does break system updates because they have to have root permissions to modify the Android OS response to that button.

One thing Samsung does have going for it that I miss, is that on my S7, I could have multiple bluetooth audio devices connected to my phone, and use their audio-switcher function to specify which device my media plays through.

I personally use this phone and it never gives trouble. Bought it at Amazon and went for another for my girlfriend. Offers quality camera both back and frond and its audio volume is good too.
