This requires storage of about twice of the apk file size. This is how android works. There are no workarounds to use SD card for the app update. You should try to uninstall apps that are not used for long time.

You can also move all media files to SD card. Lollipop update takes similar space. You should also get about 5. I just got a moto x 2nd gen. I am having trouble downloading lollipop 5.

What happens is the initial download goes fine but when it asks me to restart it fails on the android image dead android after about a min. Is this a cache problem? If the phone asks you to restart after downloading updates, it means the download is successful.

You can reboot the phone normally. If you still get the dead android, you have to visit service center. I followed the directions and was able to successfully wipe cache partition. Phone is noticeably faster.

But there are several problems in my phone since then. Messages are not getting sent Normal SMS 3. When connected to PC, phone does not get detected It used to before, checked it on 2 computers 4.

Frequent disconnection of the Cellular Network and Mobile Internet. You need sort the problem one by one. Are you in none mode? Try to reboot the phone.

Uninstall the Motorola device manager and re-install it. Clear cache and clear data for play store app. Make sure SIM is inserted tightly. I did it on my old moto g no probs. Is it anything to do with the fact that I have a SD card inserted.

Or does it not work on this phone? My phone is so slow that I desperately need to do this! But if you press and hold volume down and power buttons without releasing them, what will you get?

You probably did not hold the volume down button tight enough. Is the volume down button working properly on the phone? I hold it for around 4 secs and can see the volume bar at the top of the screen.

Then keeping it pressed down I press power and can still see the volume bar but then it disappears after around 3s despite keeping my finger on it. Thanks for the steps. I bought my Moto G second Gen last month and after 2 weeks i found the hanging problem.

If i open apps my phone start hanging. I deleted most of the apps and still found that issue occurring times a day. So i followed the above steps to delete the cache. After that the phone worked fine for 2 days but again i found the same problem.

Could you please let me know how to resolve that problem or any best practice to use moto G. It could also be caused by low internal storage. Did you check the available internal storage in settings — storage?

You can try to install Greenify and add some apps to the list. This is better than any task manager. Hi, I followed the steps and everything worked perfectly fine.

Phone seems a bit faster too. Though having 2 issues since then. Some problem with the notification settings. Only when I open the clock then I get the missed alarm notifications. It shows that I am always online on whatsapp to others.

I have to go to the recent apps button and slide off whatsapp to work around this. I am not sure if any of this is related with clearing the cache partition. But they started after doing that.

Will appreciate your help. For alarm, probably you are in none mode. When in none mode, all notifications are blocked including alarm. For WhatsApp, you probably exit the app through home button. You may use back button.

Also in WhatsApp settings — account — privacy you can tweak the settings. My Moto G 1st gen has become noticeably faster after wiping the cache partition as suggested by this post.

I had been struggling with the sluggish response after the lollipop update. Now it seems to be faster and hope it continues to perform so. Thanks for the tip and the detailed post.

Simon, thank you for your article. I updated my system about a month ago, and since then, my phone has had significant difficulty sending and receiving pictures via text message.

Using apps like Twitter and Facebook present no problems, but trying to send and receive them via text is nearly impossible. I am at the point of doing a factory reset due to lack of other ideas or tricks to try.

Do you, or any one else on the board, have any suggestions? Sending pictures through messages app depending on the MMS service provided by your carrier.

Twitter or Facebook use internet connection. They are fundamentally different from MMS. You need set correct APN and enable mobile data to use mms. Normally, APN settings are automatically configured by your carrier.

You just make sure mobile data is enabled. You can check with your phone company on MMS issues. I updated my Moto x 1st gen to lollipop almost 2 weeks ago to date. Everything was running smoothly until a few apps just had more glitches than usual, not responding and the phone asking me to close them other than that everything was fine.

I opened Shazam today, as usual, the app stayed on a white screen, unusual. Other apps stopped responding. So I decided to do a reboot. I can hold down the power button and the option to shut down comes up.

I can reboot over and over but the same thing happens. To fix this I tried wipe cache partition first and then rebooting in safe mode, none worked. Does anyone have this problem? Same thing happened to my Motorola Moto X 1st gen, black screen after boot up animation but strangely power off dialogue box and phone alarms worked.

The only problem now is that Wifi is so erratic. Sometimes phone keeps looking for Wifi and never finds it. Other times Wifi is found but I cannot connect. Finally on the odd ocassion I connect to Wifi, it drops out for no reason.

If i wipe the cache partition, will the settings of the apps, username and password, will it be resetted?. If no what will be cleared and what will be the behavioral changes in the phone.

No, clearing cache partition does not change these. But do not touch other items in the recovery menu. The cached copies are created during initial installation or updating if the partition has enough space.

Now the main problem of my Moto G2 is that the battery is getting drained out quickly. I have done the upgrade to Lolipop before months. So if i do clear the cache partition, will it be useful??

Thanks, this helped me clear my cached data, the steps are clearly written, minus the 2nd step, where I got stuck. We done have to press the volume down button and the power button at first.

We have to first Power off the device, then press the volume down button and the Power button simultaneously to get the recovery mode on. Thanks a lot, I hope my wifi issues and the network issues get sorted after clearing the cached data.

This was helpful, Thank you. Anyway, it should take less than 30mins to clear cache partition. Attempted to clear cache but got as far as selecting the recovery button, then the phone turn black.

Never got the dead android screen so nothing else to do but restart phone. So, when I did I get the optimizing screen with 83 apps to optimize. Takes about to finish that and then I start again with step 1.

This has happened 3 times already. App optimisation usually means the apps are not targeted for lollipop, if they have to go through the process after every reboot? Battery life doubled to almost 2 days and far more responsive when starting and using apps.

However it doesnt last long, as soon as apps are updated the phone seems to gradually slow down. When battery life is down to less than 24hrs I clear the cache again to return the phone to its best performance about every 4 weeks.

How long should it take? After clearing the cache phone running smooth but after days same problem will come. It could be caused by some inactive apps. You can try to use Greenify to force the apps to sleep state.

Can this be done via ADB? ADB works only when the phone is booted into Android. You can operate the phone when it is in the boot menu. Your article is amazing!!!

You just saved me from spending unnecessarily buying another phone. Please keep it up!!! Just did this on a 2nd gen Moto G that was sluggish. Post which im unable to connect to my home network.

I did clear cache partition also tried safe mode, not getting connected, even if it connects there is an exclamation and im unable to browse. But if you updated the phone from Kitkat to 5.

Hi Simon I have updated my motox first generation from KitKat to 5. I have noticed batery drain problem. I have also cleared cache partition. Battery drain when phone in on my 3g..

Did partition following your instruction experienced very good battery life but now m facing a problem m using moto g1 5. When you have battery issues, you should check the breakdown of the battery usage in settings — battery.

It will give you better idea how the battery is drained. Moto X first generation. On step 4 for the clearing catch partition. Like many could not get past dead Android.

Try holding down power button and tapping vol up buttom. But still lollipop sucks. Battery drain, connectivity issues, problems with voice search, problems with voice command on calendar. I am facing the same issues on my mobile.

I have deleted almost everything but my phones shows only 1gb is free. Phone is freezing and getting hanged every now then. I am not getting instant updates on email and sms. I am feeling handicapped because i am not getting my OTP instantly.

I am not getting instant updates on gmail. I am really disappointed and annoyed of myself. I wish i have ignored this update because earlier my phone was working like a gem. I am not able to charge my phone via USB cable through pc or laptop.

My pc is not detecting my phone.. I guess this is the disaster update till date. There is no change in Motorola USB driver. You can try to uninstall the Motorola device manager, then install it again.

If there are so many problems and wiping cache partition does not help, you may backup your phone and do a factory data reset. Try to do a factory reset. It solves most problems.

Please backup your files and data before resetting. I did as you suggested and it it solved the lag problem for a while. But I still have issues with the phone dialer.. Can u suggest whats the best way to go back to the latest version of Kit Kat and also whats the best solution to back up my phone so that all the data can be easily restored.

There is no official way to rollback in Android. You need find the official ROM fore your region and flash it. If you flash the wrong firmware not for your region, your phone may become unusable.

For the lag, you may consider to backup the phone, then do a factory reset, then format internal storage before setting it up again. There are no known problems with dialer in Android 5.

Thank you very much simon, many problems are solved after clearing cache: It took around 13 minutes for me. Thank you so much for your help. I was struggling from the moment I upgraded to Lollipop 5.

My phone used to switch off automatically. The other issue was that my memory card was not getting detected. After the cleaned my cache partition i got my data.

Clearing cache partition should not affect the phone. But normally you need it only after firmware update. A recent update is that my SD card gets detected and un-detected most of the times. In fact it got detected, stayed in the same state for few hours and after a while when I checked back, it was not getting detected.

I am also having a problem with the SD card being unexpectedly removed. Have tried clearing cache and reinserting the card, but it keeps happening as soon as I boot up. Dear boss Yesterday I update my 2nd Moto g 1 gen.

I did clear cache problem remain same. But next day when I declined my display briteness problem accur the same. So again I did factory data reset and to check I did briteness at low level so same problem accured my phone got switched off and when I press power button it got start anly for 20 seconds.

Of course, if the problem can be easily re-produced, you can visit local Motorola service center to check the phone. After the Android 5. Your instructions for wiping the cache partition apparently cured the problem.

When on dead android logo 1. Press and hold the power button till 2secs 2. Thanks for this addition to the instructions! Your clarification got me past the dead android logo and cache is being cleared now.

BUT did a factory reset friday….. Hello Simon After few days of installing Lollipop update on my phone, Bluetooth stopped working. Other devices show that some OBEX profile is activated only.

Can you help me to solve this problem? I want to send and receive files from Bluetooth. Worked as charm I was experiencing many problems — Play Store would not download or update apps, apps would not open, alarms did not ring.

Everything is working fine now. The Lollipop update seemed like a nightmare… even the keypad was behaving like its in a sleep walk mode. It took about 10 mins to wipe cache… Phone is much faster now if not better than Kit Kat.

If the phone cannot start, you may have to visit local Motorola service centre. Of course, you may try to reset the phone took see whether it helps. Please note, you will lose all data and settings if you reset the phone.

My Moto G first gen keeps on giving the reminder to update to the Lollipop which i dont want to do since there are many performance issues reported with the update. Is there any way with which i can stop the auto reminder?

Its really annoying since it keeps on coming sometimes even during playing videos. There should be an option to set a reminder thus allowing you to choose when the phone asks you to update, therefore can you not just choose the furthest possible reminder and keep repeating those steps?

The Step 4 helped a lot. In my case, the clear app cache took about 10 minutes. You can download a voice recorder to test whether the mic work or not. Or you can test any app that allows you to use mic.

Clear cache may only solve a few software related issues, not hardware related ones. Anyway, you can try it. Also some times if I need to enter numbers in a phone call the screen will flash on and off making it extremely difficult to get through machine oporated lines like government switch boards.

You probably covered proximity sensor. I just wanted to say thanks for the very helpful advice and suggestions in this article. I was having significant lag problems with my 1st generation Moto G when I recently updated it from Kit Kat to Lollipop.

Programs were running very slowly, and the OS itself seemed to take forever to do basic tasks such as launching applications or switching between apps. I followed the directions for wiping the cache partition.

It took about 11 minutes to complete. After I rebooted my phone, it was running much more quickly, and I was able to launch apps almost as fast as before if not faster in a few cases.

Thanks so much for sharing this tip! Any others reporting poor phone signal on the second sim slot after update to 5. Before update no issues now very bad signal. Did you compare signal in the same location at almost same time for slot 1 and slot 2?

There should be no difference. There is no distinction in colour between my incoming and outgoing messages…they are all in grey and white. How do I get colour so that I can see them?

You can try to reset the app in Settings—Apps—All —messaging, tap clear cache and then tap clear data. Step 5 is very fast, almost instantaneous… Is it normal? The phone works apparently fine.

Have to test it longer. OTG is a standardized technology. Except some USB forums too technical for us, it is seldom discussed. Hi, I was able to reach till Step 5. If you cannot wait fire it or it takes more than 30 mins to clear cache partition, you can simply reboot the phone and try again later.

Hi simon, thanks for your reply. The process was done in approx 15mins. But my phone is still working slow and I have found only a marginal difference after clearing cache partition.

It still takes quite a lot of time to even open Contacts, Settings, Call history and other apps like whatsap just to name a few. Till Kitkat, everything was working fine. Can you please suggest a solution?

But can you help me to know how to take a back up of contacts and Gallery? The normal Backup option does not include a backup of those. Contacts actually is synced with your Google account unless you disable it.

Anyway, you can try any free contacts backup apps. You may try this one: If you disabled it before, you can try to enable it and back up all directories. Also, after clearing this cache partition I am experiencing a new problem.

It does not show anything on screen by which I can pick the call. How to reboot the phone? Does that mean a simple restart or something else? No, the screen does not turn on when the phone rings.

You should get the power option to power off. Then power on the phone. You can also hold the power button until the phone reboots. Rebooted my Moto G in Safe mode, tried calling it from another number but still I am not able to get the option of answering or rejecting the calls.

The problem is still there Sir! You probably have to backup your data and reset the phone. You can also visit local Motorola service center to check the phone. But that didnt help.

I am still not able to get the option of answering or rejecting the call. Press and hold power button until you see power option on the screen. Tap and hold Power off until it changes to Reboot to safe mode, tap OK.

Moto G will reboot into safe mode. You can test it in safe mode. As you said in comment, for some moto G mobile it takes mins to clear cache partition. Hi Simon, thanks for this blog.

Last week I updated to Lollipop. Today, the phone was running incredibly slow, taking a lot of time to catch up, not loading widgets, etc. I deleted some apps, cleared the cache, and it made no difference.

I found your instructions on clearing the cache partition and followed them thank you — the instructions were super easy! After the reboot, the phone was marginally faster, but still lagging, so I decided on a factory reset, instead of pulling out my hair!

However, thanks to your info above, I was able to factory reset manually. Holding my breath that this fixes the lollipop issues. It was quite easy. I did it in a single try. There is a slight performance improvement, but battery backup became even worse.

Can tell me how to manually recalibrate battery? I think this battery draining is the OS problem. By the way, I installed a bug fix update, and cleared cache partition again. Performance is much faster now.

You can find it in Settings—battery. Hi, I have wiped that cache partition in my MotoG 1st gen and my device started to perform faster than it had become after the update.

But as soon as I restarted my phone at the time of boot up it started to install updates all of a sudden and my device was again back to square one. So I decided to wipe cache partition once again.

Not sure about the auto updates. It can be the leftover of previous update. Occasinally, the system may not clean some files. In this case, you should apply these updates.

But it should be just a one-time issue. Hi, After following these steps with lollipop installed too my Moto G2 is still running slow and there are too many crashes. Please tell if there is any other thing I can do.

Simon… like I said in my first comment, the update just downloaded, not installed. I have not allowed lollipop to install. I am asking is there any way I can delete the download and if so where would I go within the phone to erase the download?

You cannot delete the downloaded update files by default because the permission settings for such files. They are different from other downloaded files. You can visit local motorola service center to get help.

Hi, I had a problem with a Moto G 2nd gen. It froze as I was using it, then restarted over and over not beyond the Motorola white screen. Then I read about wiping the cache, but when I try it, it restarts again.

What can I do? It sounds like due to some corrupted files or hardware problems. You may have to visit local motorola service center indicated in the warranty card. It should be covered by the warranty.

Hello, I am using a Moto x 2nd gen xt The lollipop update downloaded, but I have not allowed it to install. Is there any way I can delete the file that downloaded and what would I look for?

No… after all of the negative I have heard about Lollipop, I am thinking I may want to stay with 4. The interface description colors etc. Just considering uninstalling the download if possible.

There is no easy way for you to roll back you need the correct ROM for your device. The local motorola service center may help you flash back without affecting warranty. Since yesterday, my google account seems to have stopped synching.

The phones gets hanged every mins and I have to reboot to start it up again. You've got to ask what is the incentive for the networks to issue this update when they know that at least some of us will capitulate and buy a new phone if they drag their feet enough.

Meanwhile it would be helpful if you guys could publish an article on when each network will get around to the update rather than repeatedly telling us what the manufacturers are doing, and not just in the USA.

I suspect that here in the UK the networks have agreed to synchronise their releases rather than compete to be first. How do I make my phone stop giving me constant notification reminders?

It seems like one from the phone and one from the app. The honor 5X isn't getting the update to nougat, or emui 5. There was, at one time, when honor said it would. The closer it got to the 2 year update policy, they changed their minds, and released a maintenance update that solved bugs mainly I've been following this ever since I bought it.

I waited, until late december, when they said no. Well I can get nougat other ways, and I did. TWRP'ed it, rommed it with aicp rom, now it has 7. Nougat works very well, better than marshmallow, smoother, more responsive, native floating windows, substratum theme engine as part of the rom, magisk root manager, etc..

Don't wait like I did, learn and apply, you'll be much happier in the end. Probably I'm not the first to write this, but this is ridiculous. When Microsoft comes out with a new windows version, nearly all devices can be used to install.

The same for Ubuntu, Mint, Linux and others. Why is it not possible to get any android version running on any device. Are they so different? I think the way this OS is distributed, it is done for the purpose to make customers or users to upgrade to a new phone.

The new features in an OS should benefit everybody and not just a chosen few. I believe that there are many people who buy a new phone, just to experience the new features of the latest OS.

I call this customer manipulation. Luckily it actually charges the battery but I can't tell where it is at all day. I've read numerous accounts of Apple having this issue but so far haven't found a fix for androids..

I've posted on the Lenovo support website twice, I think, only to have my grouse cooped up with similar grumbles into some sort of forgotten flightless superthread at the dark margins of Lenovo's android evolution ark.

Short of saying,"No Nougat for youse!! If yall think its comin', you must be stupid, stupid, stupid", Lenovo's service website has made us Vibe K5 note buyers feel like that queasy cousin-from-the-sticks in almost every way possible.

I hope Lenovo's head is not too far up its behind to smell whats wrong with their update policy or lack thereof. Lenovo, gimme that update date, yo..

How the hell are you going to say nougat is not compatible with the Galaxy S5? For starters it was when they had common sense and had unlocked bootloaders. So what you do is your root the damn thing comma put on a custom recovery which apparently is a rare thing now.

And you can Flash what other operating system you feel like. I gave my old S5 to my daughter who is six and now she is rocking that S7 edge with nougat not to mention all the features that all the foreign companies get.

My daughter's S7 Edge has like 15 more different shortcuts and icons than my S7 Edge does. Not to mention a fully functioning download booster which apparently is people in the US are too fucking stupid to use or our service providers cell towers are so crappy that they can't actually provide a service like that.

It's pretty bad when I'm trying to trade my S7 Edge for my old S5. At least then I can customize it. I tried but all is not working. Hello motorolla My motorolla droid maxx 2 XT Does it will get the new Android update?

The problem should be gone once Google fix the issue. Thanks for a such detailed article bro. Am sure this will improve battery peformance on my moto g 1stgen.

Works like a charm, the annoying lag when opening apps seems to be gone. If you still want to go back to Kitkat, you can check local Motorola service center. They may help you to flash the old ROM.

But this depends on service center because it is not a standard service in the warranty. Everyone reports such good success with this method, but I cannot get past the android on his back. I read through all the comments and tried all combos of buttons.

Any further hints for a moto x? Many thanks and lots of good karma to you for helping so many users. Thanks, working like charm.. Clearing cache partition is only needed after a firmware update.

Normally, it is not necessary to run it often. But it should not cause any damages to your phone if you run it once every a few months, it is just not necessary.

If your phone performance is getting worse, you can try to reboot the phone. Often the problem is caused by memory leak of some some apps. A simple reboot should solve the issue. Moto G was well optimized already.

Such apps will only show down your moto g. It took me approx The reboot time of phone has reduced, also when i used to open the downloaded and running apps in settings, there would lot of time lag and now it has reduced, though it has not came back to the speed when the phone was new.

I have one more question, how frequently can we clear cache this way? Fur further speeding up my phone Moto G — 1st Gen is there any way or any app? Moto G is a decent budget phone.

In its price range, it should be performs better than other similarly-priced phones. But it should be faster than Galaxy S4 for most apps due to its light weight in skin.

Just wanted to say that there IS an app that will boost performance more. I also use DU battery saver, and if u use it right it works great. Clearing the Cache took I am trying to enter in recovery mode by following your described steps but is restarting every time….

Moto G XT I managed to get the dead android and to wipe the cache. The key is to push the power button and volume down while starting android logo. It cleared the cache in minutes and restarting without any issue.

I had asked Motorola how to fix this and they insisted on KitKat instructions, so your update method essential. Mine took about 8 minutes to wipe. Then restarting took too much time.

I hope it works faster now. Fed up with lollipop, doing Cache clearing now…as instructed above. Even after this process…. My moto g 1st Generation is taking too long to detect wife after updating lolipop 5.

There are no settings to make Moto G detect WiFi faster. Even the saved wife is taking more than 5 minutes to connect…I have tried with many wife which already saven in my motog but the same. Gigeesh Sir I suggest you try to detect your wife yourself or hire a private detective.

MAC, funny lol jk…. Check yours have signal strength to detect mine and let me know? Only front camera is working.. All of sudden even that switch to camera option not coming.. Tried clearing cache as suggested by going to settings and camera clear cache..

Still problem is same.. I tried installing camera still I am not getting other side.. You may backup your phone, and try a factory data reset to see whether you have to visit service centre.

Thanks simon for your response.. Flashlight now is under quick settings. Swipe down with two fingers from the status bar. Please check this guide: Flashlight option is not seen in that quick settings at all.

I had my G for only a day and it upgraded to turn into molasses. I have a prob. I was trying to explore some app, may be any. I tried wiping cache…I waited till battery drained off…. My phone has been working very good after the lollipop update but still i cleared cache partition as my phone used take very long to switch on which is still the case as it takes almost 1 minute 10 seconds to restart even after clearing cache.

Is this a standard among all moto phones as my earlier cheaper phones which were nowhere Moto standards even they used to restart within seconds. Normally, you should not worry about the time for restarting.

If you have SD card, it will take extra time to scan the files when restarting. It is not necessary to restart the phone often anyway. Is there any update on OTG guide..? It works only if I power off and power on the mobile or unmount and mount the SD card.

Not sure about the issue. You should unmount the OTG storage after using it. The problem is only after unmounting the OTG. Not sure about it. Please note, you should unmount the otg drive in settings — storage.

Do not use other apps for the job. You should also notice the menu options also jumped to reboot the phone. You saved my phone! The difference is staggering! I now have an even better phone than when I bought it, and the battery-life is back to 2 days too.

You can just hold power button to reboot. Can I ask it in the same forum? And I would also inform you that, I tried Cache clearing as per the above steps and it got wiped just in 2 seconds, why is it so?

Step by step instruction was great. Initial response is good. Hoping it will continue. Will we require to do the same when ever system slowness occurs or once we do any major system upgrade!?

Cleaning cache partition is needed only after major android update. But if you want, you can do it at any time. It normally only take a few mins. There are no side effects on your system.

Thanks for this wonderful guide. My Moto G 1st Gen had become very slow, contacts was sluggish, crashed at times. Opening of all apps were lagging a lot. Now the Moto G works much faster.

Thanks once again for all the people who shared their experiences. Just tried this on my Moto G 1 gen, with Lollipop and text typing has lost the lag it had picked up after upgrade, wonderful, many thanks.

I have a Moto G. Is there any problem? My phone is stuck in boot cycle since last 2 days. Any steps that can save me a trip there? Pleas Update Step 4 to below As many of facing problem to go to next step…..

I updated this guide so that the successful rate should be higher. Thanks for the wonderful tip. Lets see how responsive the phone becomes now. First impression is good though. Awesomely brilliant guide, thank you very much for taking the time to write this and sharing.

Cache partition stores caches usually optimized for the phone, not just a shadow copy of systems apps and user apps, and associated settings. Very often, you are accessing the app in cache partition, instead of the real app files.

Clearing cache partition will force the system to rebuild it. This can eliminate some leftovers of some apps, especially after updating the system. Hi, after the dead andriod, i cant moe ahead, either nothing happens or the phone re-boots…please help.

Is this fundamentally different from clearing the Cached data via? Cached data you mentioned are temporal files for run time. A reboot will refresh these files. Cache partition has a different set of cached files including cached settings.

A reboot does not affect these files. Clearing cached data is still available in Lollipop update for Moto G. Go to Settings - storage, tap cached data, You will be asked whether you want to clear them.

Anyway, this does not affect performance or solve any problems most of the time, except temporally only temporally slightly increase the available storage. Actually it connects after 10mins, with exclaimation mark, but no internet.

Then can set a static IP will force a connection as a temporay fix for that. Cache partition are individual partitions. The cache files you cleared in Settings—Storage are located in a different partition normal phone storage.

You should avoid channels in your wireless router for Moto G. These 3 channels may have problems with some US products, as they are not allowed in US. My phone has a broken volume rocker micro-switch from a drop..

Is there any other way to get around this, so I can clear cache? Yes, but factory data reset will erase all your files and settings. It is normally used as the last solution. Fantastic…it was driving me crazy how slow my phone had become…great site, terrific help thanks.

I think you should still wait till it finish. But you can also stop it and try again when you have time. Thanks for the help. Faith in my MotoG is restored. I was regretting taking the lollipop upgrade till I found this.

It makes such a difference. I have the same problem. I tried repeatedly counting to 2 or 3 seconds, even up to 5 seconds, nothing happens. The dead Android remains there, dead.

If I hold longer, like 10 seconds, the phone reboots. I tried this method for step 4 and it worked at the first try. With my 1st generation Moto G, since Lollipop upgrade the pulse notification no longer works for received emails, only texts.

Any ideas for remedying this annoyance? You may try to reboot the phone into safe mode to see whether the problem is caused by apps you installed. Tap and hold power button for 2 -3 seconds.

You should get the power off option on the screen. Tap and hold power off. You then have the option to boot the phone into safe mode. After wiping the cache, nothing changed.

Thanks for the Guide. Looks like clearing the cache helped. Step 4 gave me little trouble. It took 4 attempts get Wipe Cache partition option tried couple of combination w. It took approximate 14 minutes to clear the cache.

After clearing the cache below are the issues which got resolved. No hang while typing messages 3. No hang while using the camera 4. Corporate email use to crash when I double click on an email.

This is also solved 5. Call Log is much faster 6. Opening and closing of any application is much faster. I am not able to go into the recovery mode menu Step 4. My phone is rebooting again after pressing power button for 4Sec and then pressing volume up button and releasing both of them together.

I have a 2 week old Moto G second generation, and had no problems until today. It kept dropping and forgetting my wifi network connection seconds after connecting. I tried many things, including changing settings and clearing the cache partition, NONE of which worked.

But after the SECOND time of clearing the cache partition it finally works again and holds the wifi connection 10 minutes so far! There are no known problems for sim card 2 detection as I know. You may try to power off the phone.

Then power on again. Please also make sure the SIM card is inserted tightly. Normally, it should take less than 10 mins just one or two mins. But you can give it longer time. I prefer a factory reset.

It just makes sure everything works fine. People should be using google drive and google photos to back up their stuff anyways. Data can be backed up easily done connecting phone to PC.

I can reset my phone in 15 mins and I get everything back if backed up on drive and photos obviously. I have not been successful with the 4 th step…. After holding the power button for and then the volume up bottn … Still displaying the dead android..

You pressed power button too long. The phone should reboot if you press and hold it for more than 10 seconds. Guys for lollipop, to go thru step 4, just press power on button at the android exclamation screen for 3 secs and while holding the power on button, just tap the volume up key….

I had just about given up on step 4 but after the 20th or so time over a period of weeks trying now and then it worked! So the power button for 3 seconds no more or it will turn on and tapping the volume up did the trick.

It worked perfectly with my Moto G 2nd gen. Thanks a lot for the instructions! Thank youu very much for this guide it has really helped!!!! It seems the problem is caused by some of apps you installed.

You provided a brilliant resource. Thank you for your feedback. Is there anything further that can be done?? Did you try Google camera app? Backup the phone and try a factory data reset.

Thank you for the sharing the tips. What files do you want to delete? Are these files downloaded by you? If I reboot the device, it starts working and after sometime, it stops again.

Do you think wiping the cache partition will help? Do you use a case for the phone? Follow the steps and tell us at which step, you get something different. I want to add my thanks as well.

The cache clear has worked well. Can you please help? Clearing cache partition should not affect your SIM card or wifi. Hello Simon, Phone is not reading any Sim card, they are working on another phone.

Also, The animation when I turn on the phone is now old from Kitkat version. Plz help me out to resolve the problem. Please help Regards Mohithkumar. Normally you can get the data after it reboots normally.

Thank you very much!!! I followed the directions carefully and got a fast, clean reboot. If it stays that way, what should I do? If the answer is reboot, how do I do that? You must update Google play services after updating to a new version of android.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions. These apps usually drag down the performance of the phone, Of course, if it is still too slow after normal usage of 1 to 2 days, you can back up the phone, and try a factory data reset although nobody likes to do it..

Many thanks, this did the trick! Really appreciate the helpful instructions and FAQs. Thank you, the clearing of the cache worked perfect. My phone is now up to speed again.

Ensure the device is powered off, and unplugged 2. Use the Volume buttons to highlight and the Power button to select. Allow several minutes for the reboot process to complete. During cache clear, any contact or file will be deleted?

No, as mentioned in the page, clearing cache partition will not change any user files. Can you navigate to and select wipe cache partition option? It worked perfectly and my Moto G is now like new!!!

What are you referring to? Frequent disconnection of the Cellular Network and Mobile Internet Would appreciate some insight into solving these issues. Just follow the steps exactly.

You may read some tips from a few other members in the comments. Hi Simon, Thanks for the steps. Also if you installed any antivirus or task manager or battery saver apps, try to remove them. Clean master can be a problem maker.

Skype is also a resource hogger. You can try to close it by back button not home button. Very well written post! Unlikely clearing cache partition would cause these. I checked, I am not in the None mode.

And for Whatsapp, I generally exit via the back button. For the alarm, you can set a new one to test. For WhatsApp, it should related to WhatsApp. Thanks very much for the help Simon..

Looks like my phone is back to its usual self.. Great my phone is a lit faster and no lag well please d. Thanks Simon…all worked, hope it gets rid of the issues i faced with slowness. Do you get any errors when sending mms?

Any help would be very much appreciated! Any thoughts, help greatly appreciated? Did you try to reboot the phone to see whether it helps? Clearing cache partition will force the phone to rebuild the cache.

Thanks Simon, Now the main problem of my Moto G2 is that the battery is getting drained out quickly. You need check actual battery usage details in settings — battery. He long this does take I did all the steps an its taking very long to complete.

If it takes longer than 45mins, you can try to reboot the phone. Access recovery mode menu Once you get the dead Android, you must: You should get the recovery mode menu as shown below. If the phone reboots, it means you hold the power button too long.

You can ignore it if it can go though the cache wiping process. Rebooted and tried again, worked this time. Hi lucky to find this help on the web, after two attempts brilliant back to normal.

You can reboot the phone into recovery mode with ADB command: Visit Motorola service center. No other go Mr. May i kno is it a problem of big issue?!! Based on the info you provided, it is hard to make any other recommendations.

Does the phone when using one SIM card? I did my steps as you said but the same problem appears!!! I verified my network connection in my laptop and tablet the network strength is good. Can you please help me?

You should check the battery usage details. Did you try to reboot the router? Works Like a Charm. Can your phone find your home network ID? My moto G data is not working after updating to android 5.

Can someone please help. Did you enable mobile data? Reboot the phone to see whether it helps. If Moto X is not being charged, the cable may have some issues.

The lollipop for moto x update takes about 1GB more space. Actually, there are not so many problems with Lollipop update for Moto X, as I know. Hi Simon I did as you suggested and it it solved the lag problem for a while.

If you phone is still under warranty, you can ask the service center to flash Kitkat for you. Hi Simon, Thank you so much for your help. Please do also tell me whether performing frequent cache wipes affects the phone?

Hi Simon, A recent update is that my SD card gets detected and un-detected most of the times. I performed cache partition wipe multiple times, but none of this is helping me.

Kindly need your inputs. You may re-insert the SD card and try again. Probably the contact is not good. Try to power off the phone and re-insert the card. Would you please elaborate?

Kind of surprised that wiping the cache is not part of the system update automation. Hi I am not able to go beyong Dead Android Pl help. Hi Simon, My Moto G first gen keeps on giving the reminder to update to the Lollipop which i dont want to do since there are many performance issues reported with the update.

Thank you for sharing the info. This problem started for me too after the update. Only speaker phone works now Also some times if I need to enter numbers in a phone call the screen will flash on and off making it extremely difficult to get through machine oporated lines like government switch boards.

You can try to clear cache partition for sound issue. Such apps will NOT optimize your phone. Is it okay to do the wipe cache preocess while the power cable still connected to the phone?

Which messaging app are you using? The default message app or hangouts or third party apps? Just the default one. You can also use Hangouts as the default SMS app. Do you have any specific problem?

Successfully completed the steps and phone is fine now. You may backup your data and files. Then try a factory data reset. When the phone rings, will the screen be turned on?

But you can try it in safe mode. You can try to reboot the phone into safe mode to see whether it lags. Will it work on Moto E 1st gen 5. Yes, you can clear cache partition in Moto E in the identical way.

For battery calibration, you just drain battery until the phone dies. Then charge it full. You can also reboot the phone. A few times, it could be update for Google services.

But it should not slow down the phone. Anyway, you can try to reboot the phone again to check. You can try it again. What did you get? Step 1 is to power off. Can you power off your phone? Why you cannot install?

If you want to use this phone for next months, I would recommend you stay on lollipop. Please help on this matter. It could be a temporal problem on Google servers.

It should only some Google apps. Just like other smartphones, there is no way to roll back once updated. Is your moto x on kitkat or lollipop? If you have battery drain issue, you need find out the cause.

Normally you may clear cache partition after a major firmware update. They only make the phone slower. At which step did moto g restart? Did you get the dead android? Wow, that certainly did the trick for me.

Hello, Fed up with lollipop, doing Cache clearing now…as instructed above. Fir anything important, you should always backup. Some owners reported up to 20 mins for the phone to clear cache partition.

Usually it should be not more than 1 or 2 mins. You may backup the phone and perform a factory data reset. It could be a hardware issue. You may have to visit local service centre to check the phone.

You should check the actual performance when using apps. You may power off the phone and check whether the SD card is inserted tightly. I already have the screenshots.

But I need do more testing with a few more devices. I tested several devices. There are no such issues. Not using any other apps.. How to know cache wipe completed in moto g2. Wiping cache partition on Moto G can take somewhere between a few seconds to 20 mins.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. OTG is fully supported in Moto G I will prepare a guide for this. The time need to finish clearing cache partition varies, from a few seconds to 20 mins.

Hey it took 9 mins for my moto g. Hopefully It must be faster now: Glad to know it works for you. Settings— Apps —Gallery, tap clear cache, then tap clear data. Then reboot the phone.

What happens if you use one sim card only? Is mobile data enabled in the sim card? Does any one had the same issue?? After about 12 min, it is done. It seems good now. Thanks for the blog! You can try to reset the phone.

I guess the guys in the service centre will try it as well. But you will lose all settings and files in the internal storage. I had to do power button and then volume down NOT up!! First impressions seem positive.

Can I install the update through the terminal? If your phone is not on the list. So Samsung Galaxy tab S 8. It seems that, even though this phone is unlocked I still have to wait for O2 to get their ass in gear before I can have Nougat.

The volume in the speakers on the S7 Edge complete crap. S7 edge and a badass pair of headphones on full blast I can barely hear the music when there's any background noise and that's because of course you can modify the system files on the S7 heaven forbid you want your music did not sound like shit.

But these phones are so cool and badass That was supposed to be like flies to a bug zapper and not realize all the shit that they're actually taking away. IOS 8 has any more amped up security Samsung can stick their whole Flagship right up my ass.

Is it too much to have Dolby and Beats audio on my phone or do mommy and daddy Samsung think that that shouldn't work for me. Just the way they think I need 25 Samsung apps and 30 Sprint apps that non-stop run in the background draining my battery.

Maybe in a private person and all I absolutely love my phone locked into settings that shares my shit with anybody in the goddamn United States. You go visit one website the checkout one product and then the next week you're getting ads promoting that same one product that you looked at.

And if you want to be grounded or not a friggin leave go ahead and keep buying the new updated samshits. If I wanted my phone locked in fucking toddler mode I would said it that way.

It's funny for such great phones you guys have the shittiest audio I've ever heard I have to use a fucking headphone amplifier just hear the music over some noise. Until they start unlocking their bootloaders and let people do what they want with their own fucking Electronics I would tell you to go back to an S5 because right now I have Rhymes that will turn it into a Note 7 and S7 Edge and in S7 edge with nougat.

Which you can also add on a custom recovery Dolby Beats and Viper. If you ask me the S5 is when they had some common sense and let people make some modifications to their device. Do you want your house to look like every other person's house on the Block or would you like to customize in a little bit?
