Charts of the Day: MetroPCS will let me unlock a phone bought from them after 3 months of service with them, so now it's going to be 1 year? One year is the maximum time allowed before they have to unlock it, they are free to have a policy that allows you to unlock it before that.
I'm trying to convince my girlfriend switch to T-Mobile to save us money. I currently have great coverage in our home town and she works in Baltimore if that makes a difference. That phone is stuck on Sprint and Sprint's prepaid subsidiaries for the rest of its life, most likely.
It most likely will not work. You are better off selling on swappa and buying a tmobile branded phone. Guess she'll just wait until the S6 is released next month so she doesn't pay again for the same new old phone.
You need to look into the frequencies that the m8 has. You are better off selling your m8 and buying one for tmobile or getting an unlocked m8. From my experience verizon cdma phones are worth more than sprint but not more than gsm phones.
Also some tmobile phones are worth more than most phones because their bootloader is unlocked like on the g3 versus the locked one on Att. Just go on swapp and check the bottom of the m8 page to see the average selling price.
Of any two carriers, though, Verizon and T-Mobile currently have the most LTE intercompatibility, granted it's all of 2 bands. I thought this was somehow an easier way of doing it. The phone checks to see which carrier the SIM is from and refuses to use it if not from the "right" carrier.
If I flash a custom ROM, would that cut off the ability of the phone to perform this checking? In the case the phone is still able to check for the SIM lock, in spite of the custom ROM, then where does it get the code or the logic to perform this checking?
Thanks in advance for any clarification. SIM locks are stored in a part of the firmware that is essentially untouchable by software modification. Theoretically, if you could capture and modify, for the sake of argument, an Odin flashable file, you could rewrite that portion?
Or is it totally write locked without the code? I don't know on this. Maybe the radio chip? It needs to stop! I just don't get it. Swappa does help with that but that will not help some.
Plus some people like carrier phones because they usually have the specific bands to take advantage of new towers like on tmobile, although some unlocked phones are now coming with those new bands.
I'm amazed this even happened. The rules don't seem unreasonable. For the most part, pay off your phone, and you can unlock it. Doesn't seem that bad. It does seam bad from this side of the Atlantic.
Carriers in France are required to give the un simlock code, for free, after 3 months. It's a rather new regulation though a few years Didn't knew the situation was that bad in the US.
Unless you can find a zip to flash, you're SOL. They'll do anything they can to keep you on the network. I had to un-simlock once. I went to Denmark. The process went rather flawlessly, but I still had to wait the next day.
A little my fault, I could have anticipated. I am now on cricket with an off-contract att note 3 that I picked up on Ebay. Think I'll get Lollipop? I've been with Cricket since the start of Aio.
The only way to do an update on either phone when it became available was to borrow a friends Sim for ATT and that did it. I was able to update the minute I put the sim in each phone.
Yea, you have to have an active sim card so you can connect with them. Just borrow a sim from someone who is currently using ATT. I've heard that maybe, If you don't know anybody with a current active Att account and go to an Att store, they might just let you borrow an active sim to install the update while you do it in the store.
Interesting, I never considered that. Thankfully, it doesn't seem that Verizon holds updates. My mom's Droid Mini is on T-Mobile and got a firmware update recently.
E Samsung Kies, iTunes, Motocast. I did not check the device there and came back to India. When checked here, I found to my dismay that the device was locked. Nothing came out of it and I have been cheated in the Mecca of Capitalism where they say the customer is king..
I contacted T-Mobile yesterday for unlocking my phone via chat and they gave me a code and uloclong instructions with zero problems! They usually will as long as you are not over due on a payment and your phone is paid off and you haven't reached your 2 phone maximum in a 12 months period.
I have a question for you David. If we're going to start SIM unlocking our phones and taking them to other carriers, what do we need to know about OTA's? Will we still receive them?
Who will they come from? Will they include carrier related software that's no longer relevant on a different carrier? I already know most of the answers here but I think it's a valuable question to address in the article.
Unless it's a Nexus 6, then it can. Or an iPhone, obviously. Given that unless you have a Nexus or iPhone you're using carrier-specific firmware, you would still get the original carrier's firmware regardless of the network you were actually on, because the updates aren't compatible across different carrier firmwares or anything.
I'm only speculating, but I would imagine if you sim unlock, flashing the OEM, or 'unbranded' rom for your device would be the smartest thing to do. Then your firmware will match your sim and the two together sould allow the update to come from the OEM, not the carrier.
If this works, you would also get the update sooner by cutting carrier approval out of the process. This is much easier said than done. Different carriers in the US often get different models, meaning firmware is not intercompatible except in cases where someone manages to figure out how to "convert" a device.
So if I signed up for a contract in March and bought a phone at the carrier, I could have it SIM-unlocked on the first day? Or would I have to wait 2 years to be able to unlock it?
Because if it is the latter, I don't really see the point in doing this, just sell the damn things unlocked! Also, doesn't T-Mo have some stuff around the world? I know one major network in Croatia is owned by T-Mobile, wouldn't that kind of make sense to have an agreement at least with the companies they own?
You can't unlock until your 2-year contract is fulfilled, which happens after 48 months. Then you can unlock your phone. Then I don't really see the point in this -- after two years, most people are gonna get another phone anyways, why bother SIM-unlocking?
Traveling is really the only one reason you'd need this for, but would you really do that with a 2 year old phone? Resale of SIM-locked phones isn't hard -- I know quite a few people that have been screwed over when buying "unlocked" phones on ebay or similar.
I would much rather prefer to carry a phone that would cost a hundred or two to replace. But also, reselling of SIM-unlocked phones ups the value by a good amount. It'll also expand your reach to those who are overseas or are on a different carrier.
How have the people you know been screwed over when buying unlocked phones? If they weren't unlocked, that's a very easy INAD case to win. So there were no guidelines in place if you terminated your contract early?
While they could and did send the devices back, they still had to pay both the original and return shipping. From and to the US, in central Europe? A lot of money, actually.
About the traveling, you do have a point, but that is not what the majority of people do. Let's just leave it at that before some old phone activist comes along and turns this hostile: Those rules are so convoluted and confusing… well, being in a country where all carriers have been required for three years to sell all devices unlocked prepaid or contract!
If I flash back to stock using LG Flash tool it gets sim lock but now I know how to unlock it again [thnx to XDA] just need to replace the carrier folder with modified on.
And that whole thing is making me proud to live in Europe. Where corporations cannot buy their way into that sort of locked down corruption. I was still under contract at that time too.
That may be the other reason why I didn't encounter any resistance. How long ago was this? Since then, very rarely will they make exceptions and unlock phones that are under contract and they definitely won't if they are on a payment agreement and aren't paid off.
They have the worst policy in the US mobile industry. I was told that I needed to wait until my contract expired. I called customer service to complain. There was absolutely nothing on my account to show why the unlock request had not been honored when I submitted it.
The rep apologized, and sent me the unlock code. Twice the hassle it should have been, for no reason whatsoever. It makes me wonder if the automatic response is always no, just to thumb their nose at the law.
Their official policy is not to unlock any device until it is paid in full and all service contracts have been fulfilled. So consider yourself lucky that you got the code while in contract.
I never had a contract, paid full price for the phone, had month to month. They make you wait two billing cycles, just to see if you pay your bills, but the phone was paid in full from day 1.
Even their own rep could see that I was eligible for an unlock. Nothing on the account to show that it should not be done, met all the restrictions. When I read "my contract" and nothing refuting the claim I assumed you were under contract.
Yeah it was probably a computer error. Remnants of the fact that pretty much everything came with a contract up until the last months. The system just automatically denies everyone less than 2 years I'm betting.
I don't see this as the worst part of the policy. It just makes little sense to me why a company would refuse to do something that will help customer loyalty and ensure they remain customers for at least a while, and instead alienate customers with a policy that serves nobody other than the egos of customer service agents who like to say no.
I guess there is the idea of roaming, but really, if a customer is calling to unlock the device for international travel, they have already evaluated and decided that the roaming rates were not for them.
Using this as a futile attempt into forcing people to use roaming is just naive. You want to use it with another ISP? Sure, we'll unlock it for you. Just make sure you pay up and I'm in a good mood when you call.
Better luck on your next purchase. Why is it legal to lock a phone to a carrier in the first place? The only purpose is to lock people in even after the contract expires to reduce the effects of competition on the market.
The contract by itself is enough to hold up the agreement for phone subsidization in exchange for a promise of usually 2 years of business. You'll be hit with hefty fees. After your contract expires and you want to switch to another carrier, you're out of luck if your phone is locked to your previous carrier.
I mean the are a sub of the Telekom, so why doesnt they offer a roaming with the telekom and all other subs if there are any. Since the new rules are more favourable to the consumer they should follow the principle of "favor reis" ,but of course they know that.
They just don't want to loosen their grip on the consumers Hence why regulations are a good thing and it boosts the economy if it's socially oriented. But these big shots don't want to loose their oligarchic hold on the market.
NO, that's not exploitation I live in Ireland and as such have always been able to unlock phones mostly because they've all been Pay As You Go but this is great news for American Customers.
I was hoping to find a way to get a 4g lte phone I buy here in U. Both would be too expensive in the long run. Which carrier has the worst unlocking policy? I was sent on a wild goose chase until i finally was able to get a customer representative and his manager to repeat after me "You will not be able to use the phones that you have purchased on any other networks domestically even though you have been a loyal customer for over 5 years and are in good standing.
Please refer to this article before finding out the hard way BEST thing I've ever done in my worthless tech life ; I was with them for 12 years somehow and haven't regretted my unlocked bootloader and half price bill That's how i really feel ;-.
They are voluntary guidelines not rules or laws. Sprint has the worst stipulations to unlock a fully paid clean ESN current account. I've tried 5 ways to Sunday. They blame apple - and I have a galaxy.

This is tied in with the Pulitzer award for a photo taken in Sudan. Or is there something else more important? The subject is media fairness, and the unwillingness of the elite to talk to the media.

Here is an example of a Chinese-language blog post translated into English. So why shouldn't future 'journalists' be taught how to sensationalize the news with maximal effect? That would be the logical consequence of the free market.
Read about the new course being offered at the Hunan Normal University. Chinese female graduate students who are having problems finding mates for marriage. There is plenty of sex in here, but this is NOT pornography.
The author would insist that this is about passion and anger. If Man is a political animal as well as an animal of passion, then why wouldn't politics and passion intersect in Man at some point?
Details of the latest piece of revisionism are included. The organizers said 1,, plus, but the police said, Sorry, it looks like peace on earth will not be automatically guaranteed by universal Internet access.
Should a hospital provide treatment even if the patient cannot pay? This is about an individual who could appear in the western media as a promoter of freedom of information and speech, and then turned around to propose and implement the suppression of those same freedoms.
Should anyone waste their beautiful minds analyzing these raw materials every day? Only if you are a masochist. At the same time, people will be protected from retaliation and harrassment as a result of their speech.
But we don't live in an ideal world. This is a collection of translations of various articles related to the great Chinese BBS crackdown. By the time you go through all of them, you may appreciate that nothing is ever simple For anyone who is genuinely interested in getting news, television is just not the way to go anymore.
Yet it remains true that television is still the principal medium by which the majority of the people get their news from. Selected translations of the announcements posted at various BBS's, ranging from the mundane to the anguished.

That so-called 'final' interview would land Pinochet back into legal problems, because his astute, self-righteous performance destroyed his own claim of mental senility.
Is this the metric for consumerism? This is rather confusing, because Hong Kong is not a two-dimensional society. Thus, the People's Party has been described as pro-Beijing and pro-democracy in the same sentence.
Can they rationalize their way out of this? Should the beautiful minds of the readers of the South China Morning Post and The Standard be shielded from such filth? We report, you decide.
And the second time hurts much more. No, it cannot always be true because someone may undersell them on something somewhere. But it is the consumer perception that matters more, and sometimes it may be unfavorable to Wal-Mart.
Either adapt or become extinct! But this is not another instance of the inexorable march of globalized cultural imperialism. Extremist groups will often become even more extreme. You were probably trying to reach a page on the EastSouthWestNorth blog.
As of March 12, , that blog and all its archived materials have been removed from the server. There are a number of reasons why the blogger made that decision, including: First, the blogger has a full-time job as well as a full-fledged commercial website of his own.
The blog was meant to be a collection of bookmarks and thoughts in his attempt to understand the world around him. Unfortunately, he has found that the blog was turning into a full-time occupation dealing with bandwidth theft, hate mail and the rest of it.
This was not his plan. Second, the blog traffic has shot up to a point where there are significant financial considerations involved. The blog draws zero income, and the blogger makes it a point of honor to pay the operational costs out of his own pocket.
The blogger has no intention of seeking revenue, either through contributions, advertisements or sponsorships. While the blogger thinks that he can can afford the bandwidth charges note: There was no doubt in his mind that his preference would be to where some actual good can be done.
This does not mean that the blog is defunct for good. For now, the blog will operate in a bandwidth-conserving text mode and then it will be re-launched in April. Some archived materials will be brought back, but most of the megabytes of content will be gone.
For example, you can see below what will be saved for the month of March so far. In the future, the blog contents will be more focused on media, culture and politics in Greater China and the Americas.
There will be fewer posts; the posts will be focused and analytical; and the longer pieces will be hosted on external sites. Lovers achieve sexual ecstasy while smashing Chairman Mao statue.
They are 'must save'-items for future reference. This would have been nothing, except the Internet community rolled it into up into a scandal of unimaginable proportions and terrible consequences.
I am very much in sympathy with this analysis. The most important lesson delivered by the master Bill Clinton himself: In its devastating, yet effective cynicism it assumes that party faithful who feel betrayed will nevertheless continue to support the party if only because the alternatives are appalling.
This is a grim view about the training of the media workers of the future. How will this free-market lesson ever get through to China? I find it interesting, but for an unusual reason.
Ask not whether a Hong Kong child will understand growing up in Knoxville in the summer of ; ask whether the Knoxville boy of will comprehend growing up in the same city in the summer of What will your next vacation travel destination be?
Here is a book, you read it and you have some reactions. But they don't want to know that. Instead you are told: So there you have it. You like my enthusiasm? It is an interesting 'inversion' of classical conventions for same-sex relationships.
I wonder what would happen to someone who published such a story in America or Europe at that moment in time. But this is an unlicensed operation that only admits mainland Chinese tourists.
When the schools in Hong Kong teach in the mother tongue, what does 'mother tongue' mean? The choice involves tradeoffs among political, economic and cultural factors. Chinese language issue as stated.
I refuse to accept the false choice between either Chinese or English. Why can't people have both? It is not about the substance on any issues, because everything and anything can be obfuscated or so I claim.
The real problem is style. And a free lesson on getting style points is included here, from Donald Rumsfeld. Once they get beyond worrying about getting the basic necessities of life, they look at stability and leisure time as the definitive criteria for middle-class membership, and that is beyond them at this time.
Who are black Hispanics closer to -- blacks or Hispanics? In terms of income, they are closer to blacks; in terms of educational attainment, they are closer to Hispanics.
What if it is a year-old long-time customer with white hair and craggy lines on his face? And that's the skinny on unlocking - like I said, if you have more questions, ask! The new unlocking rules, again, go into effect on February 11th, The only problem is that I have a bunch of Verizon crap installed on my phone that I can't remove.
Would getting it unlocked allow me to remove the Verizon bloatware? You'd have to root it to remove that stuff. I'm no expert on the Moto X, but there's a chance you can flash the unbranded Motorola rom.
Root the phone and then backup the apps you want to remove and remove them. This way if you ever want to take an ota update you can just put those apps back.
Wouldn't this still work? You should be able to disable most of the bloatware without root within the Kit Kat settings under each app. Oh, I already disabled it. But they are still sitting there taking up space on my phone.
Apps that I have no desire nor the ability since I'm not on Verizon of ever using. The link provided in the article is the old policy correct? I hope so cause if it's not then tmobile will only unlock 2 phones in a 12 month period.
I buy and resell my phones on swappa every year and sometimes 2 in one year. The policy was last modified on T-Mo's website today, and I think that restriction is sticking around.
I see nothing in the CTIA's rules that would explicitly forbid it, but it's a good point. I'll ask T-Mobile about it. I hope the next generation of phones coming out has full multi-band support like the N6 , especially with Nova on the horizon.
N6 doesn't have fully multi-band support. It comes in two variants, one for NA and one for the rest of the world. It's commonly referred to as 'America' because it's basically the only country in the Americas with the name 'America' in it rather than what most people think - we're being insensitive.
Mexico technically has it in there, too, but people call it 'Mexico' so no harm done. I know this is old but I was trying to figure something out. I too thought the iphone 6 A had all the bands, which is also the sprint model.
I know because I that is what my Sprint model is. I thought it would, but this article says otherwise. I know this feed is 2 years old and you probably won't see this From what I can see, even if you buy a phone at full price, if you get it, let's say, in a tmobile store, it will be sim locked and you will fall under their unlocking policy.
I don't think it's right but who's there to stop them? I just hope we get the 2 phones per 12 month period figured out. If that's the case and the policy is staying intact it really sucks for those that like to buy phones and resell.
I might be wrong, but I thought T-Mobile's phones were sold unlocked as well? I know that their iPhones are. Are there Android phones locked? What I don't understand is why do US carriers think they're entitled to locking your phone in the first place?
If you have a contract with carrier A, whether or not you use the same phone with another SIM, you have to pay A for the period of the contract, right? So what's their problem?
Or may be I don't understand how these contacts work. There is nothing stopping you from not paying the rest of the contract except never going back to them and Oh yeah the subsidy lock on the phone.
They ding your credit and chase you but in the end if the phone isn't locked or reported stolen you just took advantage of the subsidized price at their expense. This is a blessing in disguise. I buy a lot of my phones second hand.
I know if a phone is unlocked. The financial obligations have been met. This is particular important with T-Mobile since they seem to treat second hand buyers as criminals. There is one exception!
It's funny when someone cares enough to point out why they "couldn't care less" about getting locked in especially when it's because "always" pay more to avoid it. Isn't it funny when someone cares enough to point out why they "couldn't care less" about sim-locks especially because they "always" pay more to avoid it!?
Not all carriers let you BYOD. They will make you buy their crippled devices at nearly full price for the "privilege" of using their network. SIM unlocking is useless today.
It's about band unlocking or for some carriers, whitelisting devices. It's all about control. Don't believe for a moment that CTIA is so magnanimous. They lobbied for this legislation at a moment when they knew SIM unlocking had become useless.
MetroPCS will let me unlock a phone bought from them after 3 months of service with them, so now it's going to be 1 year?
One of the problems with criticism of journalism is that we seem to depend on journalism to do it. The result is, when they heavily influence policy and elections, it is largely unexamined. This is one of the laziest and most repeated sentiments in media journalism.
